Embroidery
Vanderhurd create the surface texture of the cloth, building pattern through intricate stitches of hand embroidery while maintaining an uncompromising standard of quality and respecting the women and men who craft our textiles.
Design
The hand embroidery is all bespoke, lending itself to custom projects. Whether it is a shaped headboard or a leading edge on curtains Vanderhurd will redesign the motif for the specific space.
Tracing
Once a design is sent to India it is traced onto acetate and run through a sewing machine which allows the design to be transferred onto the fabric with chalk through the tiny holes made by the sewing machine.
Frame
The fabric is stretched onto to a wooden frame in order to create the tension required for the craftspeople to embroider the design and maintain the correct scale throughout.
Embroidery
The main embroidery unit Vanderhurd commissions is female lead, it trains the craftswomen skills traditionally reserved for craftsmen, giving them access to higher skilled and higher valued work.
Embroidery On Print
Vanderhurd incorporates fine embroidery with our printed fabrics, embellishing the surface by outlining or highlighting the motifs in a unique and exciting colour palette.
